Event Recap: Inaugural Trivia Night 2024

Saturday 25th May saw the long-awaited Inaugural Motafrenz Trivia Night at the Prahran RSL come to life. By 6:30 pm the tables were set up, the bar was stocked, and the fabulous Emcee, Frock Hudson, was resplendent in a purple jumpsuit ready to wow the participants.

As the participants began to roll in and the tables began to fill up, the table decorations and amazing spreads started to appear with the hopes of winning “Best Spread”, including one very extravagant candelabra. Before long there were almost 90 participants across 11 tables ready and waiting for Frock to kick off the first of 3 rounds.

Paul, our illustrious President, started the night with an acknowledgement of the country and an introduction to Frock. Frock then explained the rules and started with round 1 where the teams were given a mix of questions across different formats such as multiple-choice visuals, audio ques, film clips and free text to keep everyone engaged.

Frock’s cheeky wit and mix of automotive, local and general trivia questions had the minds ticking and whispers to the scribe for each table humming with excitement. At the end of each round, Frock held a bonus round to get people up off the table and engaging. A personal favourite of mine was watching Frock sing Kylie Minogue bangers with teams having to guess the song name to win extra points. Dodgy internet meant the Spotify tracks didn’t play, but not to worry we were treated to acapella versions of the songs by Frock! Frock executed quick costume changes flawlessly between each round, like a true professional.

Chris D & Brett H kept the participants watered and fed at the bar, while the trolley dollies (Leigh K & yours truly) sold raffle tickets and promoted drinks and snacks from the kitchen cart amongst the tables. Paul H & Nick B ensured at the end of each round the answer sheets were delivered promptly to Frock for scoring to keep everything above board.

At the end of the final round, the top 3 winning tables were announced,
1st Solid Gold Dancers
2nd Tens Across The Board
3rd Chitty Chitty Bang Bang…Me Daddy

Prizes were handed to the 3 winning teams and the raffle was drawn where the winner won a hamper containing a gin set, a hot air balloon flight voucher, a Winery Experience for two and some wine and chocolates to compliment. 2nd and 3rd prizes were also drawn with the winners taking home a selection of wines and a selection of Billson’s drinks.

The closing speeches were made and thanks were given to all that contributed, volunteered and participated with proceeds going to support AQuA, the Australian Queer Archives, to continue to preserve and celebrate materials of the lives of the Australian LGBTQIA+ community.

The Motafrenz committee looks forward to arranging similar events in the future following the success of this event, and the wide array of participants across the multiple communities who supported this event
